RED BANK, NJ, March 28, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A new study released in The Lancet, one of the world's leading medical journals, concluded that metal hip replacements have a dramatically higher failure rate than other types of artificial hip devices. This study has created safety concerns and prompted a call for a ban. On February 28, 2012 the United Kingdom's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that patients with metal-on-metal hip implants should get yearly blood tests. Evaluating cobalt and chromium levels, such tests would determine if these implants were producing dangerous amounts of toxic metallic debris. Click here to read this press release.
Accumulation of metal debris from implants can cause tissue damage, cysts and pseudo tumors, cause premature device failure, necessitate subsequent revision surgery and result in other long term health problems.
Analyzing data from over 400,000 hip replacement cases between 2003 and 2011, the Lancet study found that patients with all-metal hips had a 6.2% probability of requiring a replacement within 5 years.
